Telstra and Optus Make Changes Amid ACCC's Google Search Investigation

The ACCC has been investigating Google's agreements with Telstra and Optus, which ensured Google's search services were pre-installed as the default on Android devices supplied by these carriers. These agreements, in place since at least 2017, have now expired as of 30 June 2024.

ACCC Commissioner Liza Carver stated, "We are grateful for the cooperation of Telstra and Optus in responding to the ACCC’s competition concerns. The undertakings will allow alternative search engines to compete to be a default search engine on the Android devices these companies supply."

This means that Telstra and Optus have agreed not to enter into any new exclusive agreements with Google, ensuring that rival search engines have a fair shot at being the default option on Android devices.

The investigation initially stemmed from concerns that Google's dominance in the search engine market is partly due to its default status on Android devices.
