At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week (2016), Telstra announced it will activate 5G for testing in parts of the Gold Coast during the Commonwealth Games in April 2018.

Telstra 5g well ahead

Telstra has been working with Ericsson on building the 5G standard. Telstra has revealed it will send some of its engineers to Sweden on secondment with Ericsson to work on the mathematical modelling behind the 5G network standard.

Recent 5G trials at Ericsson's headquarters produced speeds of more than 11 Gigabits per second in a complex, real world, indoor setting' in their labs.

At a speed of 10Gbps, the new network would be roughly 100x the speed of current networks.

Telstra also used the platform of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to announce the launch of a 1Gbps network with compatible portable hotspot device, and a Voice over Wi-Fi product to address coverage black spots at home or work.

The 1Gbps network will begin rolling out in late 2016 initially in central Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. It will have maximum upload speeds of 150Mbps on compatible devices, which will include a Netgear/Telstra 1Gbps hotspot device to be launched.
