Telstra has warned consumers still using "nana phones" that they will need to upgrade when the 2G network is switched off on 1 December 2016.

With almost everyone now using 3G and 4G smartphones it's easy to forget there are still plenty of people who are happily using an old GSM 2G dumbphone.

Predominantly being used by the older generation - hence the "nana phone" label - these phones have been perfect for users who only want a mobile phone to make a few calls and send the occasional text message.

This month Telstra is sending out text messages to those with 2G devices reminding customers that they have 18 months until the 2G network is shut down at the end of next year and their device and SIM card will no longer work.

The texts typically read: "Hi, On 1 Dec 2016 we're closing our 2G network. For continued service, you'll need a new device & SIM as both are currently using 2G."

Telstra has not sold 2G handsets for several years and currently 2G traffic accounts for less than 1% of total network traffic.

But that is small consolation for those who love their dumbphones. One thing we know for certain they will notice if they upgrade - the battery will not last as long!
