iOS 27 is here, and your 64GB fleet has a problem

iOS 27 became available in Australia on 15 September 2026, days after Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro range and the foldable iPhone Duo. For Australian IT teams the headline isn't Siri. It's storage headroom, and the rising cost of buying your way out of it.

Apple's September announcements were unusual in two ways.

First, the new hardware sat entirely at the premium end of the range: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. Apple did not announce a standard iPhone 18 alongside them. Widespread reporting points to the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air arriving in 2027, but Apple has not published a release schedule for models it hasn't announced.

Second, Apple raised Australian prices across the existing range rather than discounting last year's models as it normally would, with the steepest increase at the top storage tier.

Here's what that means if you manage a corporate fleet.

What actually changed in the price list

Entry and mid-capacity models moved by $100 to $150. The 1TB iPhone Air jumped $500.

The new premium models sit above anything most organisations would have treated as standard issue.

At $3,499 the entry-level Duo creates a new price tier for iPhone in Australia, reaching $5,899 at 2TB. Apple has also removed the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max from its direct retail line-up, so any fleet standard built on those models needs re-specifying. Reseller and carrier stock may remain available for a period.

Unlike most price movements, this one has an on-the-record explanation from Apple. In late June, then-CEO Tim Cook told the Wall Street Journal that Apple could no longer absorb the rising cost of memory and storage chips, both in heavy demand from AI datacentre construction, and compared the shortage to a hundred-year flood. TechInsights has estimated the DRAM package in an iPhone 17 Pro cost Apple around US$39, with the equivalent for the iPhone 18 Pro projected near US$145.

That matters for planning. This is not a one-off adjustment you can wait out. It is a structural change in what storage costs, and it lands at exactly the moment device storage pressure is increasing.

Storage is becoming a more expensive part of the purchasing decision, at precisely the point you need more of it.

What iOS 27 gives corporate users

Strip away the consumer material and a handful of changes matter for business fleets.

Siri AI. Apple's rebuilt assistant is the marquee feature: conversational, context-aware, able to work across apps and reference what's on screen. It ships in beta, in English to start, and is not initially available on iPhone in the EU. That matters if you have European staff or a globally standardised device experience.

Real performance improvements. Apple says app launches can be up to 30 per cent faster, newly captured photos can load up to 70 per cent faster and AirDrop transfers up to 80 per cent faster. These are Apple's own benchmark figures so real-world results will vary, but they are the kind of improvements users notice, and they extend down to an iPhone 11.

Apple Intelligence now has usage limits. Apple states that certain features relying on server-side models, including Siri AI, intelligent photo editing tools and Image Playground, are subject to daily usage limits that vary by feature, request complexity and system demand. Apple also says expanded access to those features will be available for a fee in future. If you are building a business process on these services, do not assume today's access model is permanent.

No device was dropped this year. iOS 27 supports exactly the same models as iOS 26: iPhone 11 and newer, plus iPhone SE 2nd generation and later. For fleet managers that is genuine breathing room.

The three tiers nobody explains properly

This is where user expectations break, so it is worth being precise. There are three separate lines, not one.

  1. Can run iOS 27 — iPhone 11 and newer, plus iPhone SE 2nd generation and later.
  2. Can run Apple Intelligence — iPhone 15 Pro and newer. A standard iPhone 15 does not qualify. Neither does an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
  3. Can run the most advanced on-device features, including custom Siri voices — requires the A19 Pro chip, meaning iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone Duo.

So an iPhone 16 and an iPhone 17 Pro both "have Apple Intelligence" and still deliver measurably different experiences. Your users will notice, and they will raise it as a fault. Set the expectation before they set it for you.

The storage problem, in Apple's own numbers

Apple's footnote on its Australian iPhone purchase pages states that a standard configuration uses approximately 12GB to 24GB of space, including iOS 27 and the Apple apps that can be deleted. On devices that support it, Apple Intelligence on-device models use approximately a further 7GB, removable by switching Apple Intelligence off.

There is an important distinction here that is easy to get wrong.

On a 64GB handset, Apple Intelligence is not part of the calculation at all — no 64GB iPhone supports it. But Apple's stated standard configuration can still consume up to 37.5 per cent of the device before a single line-of-business app, mailbox cache, Teams file, offline document, photo or video exists.

On a 128GB handset, the operating-system footprint is far easier to absorb. Pressure still builds once users maintain large offline mailboxes, pinned OneDrive or SharePoint content, and video.

And an over-the-air update needs working space in addition to the final installed footprint. A device that sits persistently near capacity becomes progressively harder to update reliably, which is how fleets quietly fall behind on patching.

That is the real 64GB problem. Not that iOS 27 suddenly consumes half the disk, but that there is very little operational headroom left once you add everything a corporate device actually carries.

What to do if a device can't free up enough space

More options exist than deleting apps at random.

  1. Update from a Mac or Windows PC. Apple supports updating through Finder or the Apple Devices app when a device cannot complete a wireless update. This is the first thing to try on a wedged handset.
  2. On Apple Intelligence-capable devices, switch Apple Intelligence off temporarily. That releases roughly 7GB per Apple's specification. The models re-download when it is re-enabled.
  3. Offload unused apps. This removes the application binary while retaining its documents and data, and can be automated.
  4. Remove locally downloaded cloud content rather than deleting source files. Files held offline from OneDrive, SharePoint or iCloud Drive can have the local copy removed while remaining available online — a safer first move than deletion on a managed device.
  5. Clear genuinely disposable content. Recently Deleted in Photos, downloaded media, old attachments and browser data accumulate significantly over a device's life.
  6. Move persistent content off the device properly. That is a broader storage-management conversation, and the subject of our companion post on cloud alternatives and Intune.

Treat storage remediation as a managed process run ahead of a rollout, not a device-by-device emergency after updates start failing.

If you choose not to upgrade, are you still covered?

For a controlled period, yes.

Apple released iOS 26.7 at the same moment as iOS 27 — 14 September US time, 15 September AEST — containing security fixes and no new features. iOS 26 users see 26.7 as the default update with iOS 27 offered below it. That gives organisations a patched holding position while UAT and staged deployment run.

Treat it as a bridge, not a support commitment. Apple does maintain older branches in some circumstances, but it publishes no fixed enterprise support period guaranteeing how long a previous major release will receive every security fix. If you hold devices on iOS 26 during testing, set an exit date rather than letting the exception become permanent.

The Microsoft deadline matters too

There is a second support threshold that has nothing to do with Apple.

Microsoft's message centre notice MC1403401, "Plan for Change: Intune moving to support iOS/iPadOS 18 and higher", states that Intune — including the Company Portal and app protection policies — will require iOS/iPadOS 18 and higher shortly after the iOS 27 release, and instructs administrators to identify devices that cannot reach that version.

One caution. Microsoft's public "In development" page currently contains an inconsistency, referring to an iOS 17 minimum in one sentence while describing iOS 18 as the minimum supported version in the next. The planning direction is unambiguous, but confirm Microsoft's final enforcement timing before you apply a hard compliance block that could lock users out.

Either way, devices that cannot run iOS 18 — iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X — should already be on your replacement list.

What about the devices still on iOS 18?

This is the question we get asked most, and it matters because "on iOS 18" describes two completely different populations. Your Intune report shows them as one number. Operationally they are nothing alike.

Group one: devices that can move but haven't

Any iPhone 11 or newer sitting on iOS 18 can run iOS 27. If it is still on 18, the cause is operational: deferred updates, insufficient storage, a configuration policy, an application dependency, or a user postponing indefinitely.

Do not assume these devices are patched. Apple's normal practice is to make iOS 18 security updates available only to devices that cannot upgrade further, pushing everything else onto the current branch. The exception came in April 2026, when Apple extended iOS 18.7.7 to upgrade-capable devices in response to the DarkSword exploit — an unusual step Apple took because the threat warranted it, not a standing policy.

In other words, this group may be sitting on an unpatched branch right now, and their protection depends on Apple judging a given vulnerability severe enough to warrant a backport.

Action: identify them, resolve the upgrade blocker (usually storage), and move them onto iOS 27 through your staged rollout. This is housekeeping, not a budget item.

Group two: devices that cannot go any further

The iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max support iOS 18 but are not on Apple's iOS 27 compatibility list. For these, iOS 18 is not a delayed upgrade. It is the end of their major-version path.

These devices are currently maintained. Apple released iOS 18.7.10 for the XR, XS and XS Max in August 2026, which confirms iOS 18 remains an actively serviced branch for models that cannot move.

But they now sit exactly on the version Microsoft is signalling as its next supported floor, with no upgrade path available if that floor rises again.

Action: put this population into your funded replacement forecast now, while you can still choose the timing rather than having a support threshold choose it for you. Worth noting that retiring these devices properly recovers some of the cost: certified data destruction and trade-in turn an end-of-life handset into residual value rather than a compliance liability sitting in a drawer.

A note on shared and userless devices

Shared, kiosk and warehouse deployments enrolled through Automated Device Enrolment need separate assessment. Microsoft's rules distinguish between a minimum supported operating system and older versions that remain technically allowed in particular enrolment scenarios.

That is useful latitude, but do not mistake "allowed to enrol" for "supported for every workload". Treat it as a transition strategy, not a lifecycle plan.

How to split the list

In the Intune admin centre, filter your iOS estate by operating-system version and cross-reference against device model.

For devices on iOS 18:

  • iPhone XR, XS and XS Max → replacement planning
  • iPhone 11 and newer → investigate the blocker, move to iOS 27

Then add a second dimension: storage capacity. The 64GB devices in the upgrade-capable group deserve particular attention, because they have the least headroom for the operating system, applications, cached data and update staging.

Audit before you buy. Pull your estate by operating-system version, hardware model and storage capacity. You are looking for devices that cannot reach your future support baseline, and devices whose storage profile makes reliable updating unlikely. Re-test your standard storage specification. If 128GB is your default build, model it against 256GB over the full refresh cycle rather than carrying the old standard forward. Cloud storage reduces local demand but does not eliminate application data, caches, offline content or operating-system growth, and higher capacity now carries a meaningful acquisition premium. The answer may still be 128GB for some user profiles. Make it a decision rather than an inheritance.

Stage the iOS 27 rollout deliberately. Pilot group first, a patched holding release for the rest while UAT completes, then a defined migration date for the wider fleet. Uncontrolled upgrades on nearly full devices are how a software release becomes a fortnight of helpdesk tickets.

The broader point is simple. iOS 27 has not made 64GB devices obsolete overnight. It has made the lack of storage headroom much harder to ignore.
