It is being widely reported that Apple will announce a new low-end iPhone 5se at its product launch on March 15.

Rumours suggest that the new iPhone 5se will be available in the American marketplace just three days later on March 18. (No Australian ETA date).

The iPhone 5se is being touted as the second generation iPhone 5s.

It will be a return to the smaller 4-inch screen and is aimed at consumers who want a smaller and/or less expensive iPhone than the latest iPhone 6 series.

The big difference between the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5se will be on the inside of the device, with a more powerful processor that will allow it to support future software updates from Apple. Improved camera, support for Apple Pay and Live Photos are also rumoured.

Pricing for the iPhone 5se is expected to be similar to the current 5s, starting at US$450 for 16GB.

It would be a smart move for Apple whose latest quarterly figures revealed sales of the iPhone slowed for the the first time since its introduction in 2007.

In recent years Apple has tended to launch new iPhones in September and has focused on premium handsets. It is believed the timing of the launch is designed to encourage sales across the year; while the less expensive iPhone 5se is believed to be a strategic push into developing markets like China and India.

The quick sprint to market is also a change as typically there can be weeks/months from launch to retail availability.
