Apple has announced a deal with payment solutions provider Cuscal to bring Apple Pay to 31 smaller banks and financial institutions across the country.

Cuscal will "soon" enable Apple Pay for the likes of Teachers' Mutual Bank, My State, Credit Union Australia, Defence Bank, and Australian Unity, among others.

The full list of participating banks can be found here.

ANZ has 250,000+ customers using Apple Pay

The newcomers join ANZ and and American Express who were the first major banks to join up in May 2016.

The move has worked for ANZ who reportedly have upwards of 250,000 customers using Apple Pay, a number that exceeded the bank's expectations four months after the service was launched.

ANZ - Apple Pay 'Bum Tap' ad wins hearts and minds

ANZ launched its second media campaign in June to support the uptake of Apple Pay.

The creative features the Head Tap and the Bum Tap (see below) and the tag line "we'll be taking it for granted in no time!" This follows an earlier campaign with the tag line "its a big deal...for a fraction of a second."

We'll be taking it for granted in no time

The Australian Financial Review reports that 20% of ANZ's "eligible base" of customers have loaded their cards onto Apple Pay.

Matt Boss, ANZ's managing director of products and marketing, says that

"We see there is absolute engagement across these wallets and customers are very much selecting with their feet. We think being able to provide customers with a choice of experience across mobile payments is important and only having one wallet obviously doesn't provide that for customers and is not the choice we have made."

The average size of a transaction being put through Apple Pay is 17 per cent more than the value of the average contactless payment, while usage is becoming more more consistent, ANZ said.

"You are starting to see some habit forming behaviours," Mr Boss said. "It is getting more ingrained, there are not that many people who have used it only once as a novelty."
